Institute Presentation

The University of Ostrava was founded in 1991 in the biggest city in Moravian Silesian region, Czech Republic. Its one of the youngest universities in the country and contains 6 faculties. Faculty of Medicine is the youngest one, not only in Ostrava, but also in Czech Republic.
The University Hospital Ostrava is older than The Faculty of Medicine. It was founded in 1912, but as a hospital Level III (University Hospital) began to operate from 1992. It provides basic, specialized and highly specialized care in all areas of medicine. This care is provided by 40 clinics, departments, centers, laboratories, institutes and hospital pharmacy.
The Department of Neonatology Ostrava is a part of the University Hospital and together with team of employees Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic forms the Perinatal center, one of 12 perinatal centers in the Czech Republic. Our perinatal center, with the expert team of obstetricians and neonatologists, provide care for women during whole pregnancy, childbirth and subsequently also for their newborns, especially from Moravian and Silesian region, but if its necessary, from whole republic. Approximately we have 2200 deliveries per year with 120 neonates below 1500g.
In our department we provide three-stage care of newborns. Level I - its a physiological unit, for term neonates with good postnatal adaptation. Level II an intermediate unit, for pathological neonates (term or preterm) with stable vital signs. Level III intensive and resuscitation unit, with 23 incubators or cots fully equipped, offers highly specialized intensive care for neonates (ELBW, VLBW, LBW, term), including controlled hypothermia for light preterm and term asphyxial infants, surgery (congenital malformations of gastrointestinal tract and other pathological conditions for example necrotizing enterocolitis, neurosurgery,  ophtalmosurgery retinopathy of prematurity, etc.). We cooperate with Children Cardiocentre, University Hospital Prague for treatment of congenital  defects of heart, and with Institute for the Care of Mother and Child (UPMD), Prague Neonatal unit for surgery and treatment of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
In our out-patient department we monitor all newborns discharged from intensive care unit. We assess neurodevelopment, provide detailed psychological testing (Bayley Scales of infant development), and cooperate with children neurological ambulance and rehabilitation, physiotherapy.
Our Neonatal Unit has also extensive experience with multicentre randomised trials and was recently involved in CURPAP study (Prophylactic Surfactant with early nasal CPAP), in Med Immune NUMAX trial (Phase III trial - RSV prophylaxis), NEUROSIS study (Neonatal European Study of Inhaled Steroids, randomized, placebo-controlled international multicentre clinical trial), and ETTNO study (Effects of Transfusion Thresholds on Neurocognitive Outcome of Extremely Low Birth-Weight Infants).
