Institute Presentation

With more than 30,000 students, University College Dublin (UCD) is the largest university and research institution in Ireland. The National Maternity Hospital (NMH) is the principal teaching hospital for Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Neonatal Medicine for UCD. With more than 9,000 deliveries annually, it is one of the busiest maternity hospitals in Europe. NMH is a tertiary referral centre with a special interest in feto-maternal medicine which accepts referrals from other secondary and tertiary centres around the country. The NMH Neonatal Unit includes a level 3 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). About 2,000 infants are admitted to the Neonatal Unit each year, 160 of whom weigh less than 1500g at birth.

The Neonatal Unit has a history of participation in multicentre clinical trials (e.g. ADEPT, BOOST II UK, NIPPV). In addition, we have recently completed our own randomised controlled trial which compared interfaces for nasal CPAP in preterm infants; and we are currently enrolling preterm infants in two randomised trials of delivery room interventions. We also have ongoing studies of inflammatory markers in newborn infants.
