Institute Presentation

Dr Eugene Dempsey is a Consultant Neonatologist in the Cork University Maternity Hospital and Clinical Lecturer with the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University College Cork.  He qualified from University College Cork, trained in the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital, National Maternity Hospital Holles Street and Our Lady's Hospital Crumlin before moving to McGill University, Montreal where he completed subspeciality training in Neonatology (2002-2005). His research in Montreal formed the basis of his Masters Doctorate for work on Hypotension in the Preterm infant.

Dr Dempsey is involved in a number of ongoing clinical research studies and has continued to develop his interest in circulatory support focussing on the role of near infrared spectroscopy and echocardiography in evaluating cerebral oxygenation and systemic perfusion of the preterm infant. He is Principal Investigator for the HIP Trial.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a new state of the art neonatal unit situated at the Cork University Maternity Hospital. The Neonatal Brain Research Centre located adjacent to the NICU is committed to improving neonatal health through world class biomedical and clinical research. The centre has a multidisciplinary research team who aim to translate research advances into clinical practice and improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable newborn babies.

The Principal Investigator for the HIP trial is Dr Eugene Dempsey, a Consultant Neonatologist. Dr Dempsey has an MD in Hypotension in the Preterm infant and a Masters in Ethics and Law.  He is a member of The Neonatal Brain Research Centre (NBRC). Dr Geraldine Boylan, director of the Neonatal Research Centre, has extensive experience in clinical trials and EEG involving neonates and is a co-coordinator of the NEMO trial. Dr Brendan Murphy is a consultant Neonatologist and has an MD on Post Haemorrhagic Hydrocephalus in premature very low birth weight infants.  Professor CA Ryan is Associate Professor of Paediatrics and has a Masters in Medical Education at UCC. He has extensive experience in education and in the development of all education media, particularly web-based education and training tools. Dr. Peter Filan is a consultant Neonatologist and has an MD on "The Influence of surgery on the immature brain". He is Clinical Director of the NICU. Niamh O'Shea has recently joined the team and has a number of years experience in Project Management of clinical trials. Professor John Morrison, Director of the Boole Centre for Research Informatics (BSRI), will coordinate storage of the large data set in the Boole Centre in UCC.

Eugene Dempsey is a Consultant Neonatologist, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Cork University Maternity Hospital. He is a member of The Neonatal Brain Research Centre (NBRC), and is PI for the HIP Trial.

Brendan Murphy is a Consultant Neonatologist and is based at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Cork University Maternity Hospital. He is the Coordinator for the Republic of Ireland of the NICORE (Neonatal Intensive Care Outcomes Research & Evaluation) Ireland

Tony Ryan Professor CA Ryan is Associate Professor of Paediatrics and has extensive experience in education and in the development of all education media.

Niamh O'Shea is Research Assistant/HIP Trial co-ordinator.  Niamh has been involved extensively in Project Management of Clinical Trials

John Morrison is the Director of the Boole Centre for Research Informatics (BSRI) at University College Cork and will coordinate data acquisition and storgae for HIP.

Peter Filan is a consultant Neonatologist and is based at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Cork University Maternity Hospital.

Geraldine Boylan is a Clinical Scientist and Senior Lecturer in the Medical School at University College Cork. She is co-Principal Investigator for the EU funded NEMO study,  http://www.nemo-europe.com/.

Vicki Livingstone is a biostatistician who works with the Neonatal Brain Research Group.
