Institute Presentation

Charles University was founded in 1348 and is one of the oldest universities in the world and nowadays belongs to the most eminent educational and scientific establishments in the Czech Republic which are recognized in both the European and global context. Charles University now contains 17 faculties (14 in Prague, 2 in Hradec, and 1 in Plzen). There are more than 7000 University employees, 4000 of them are academic and research workers.

The Institute for the Care of Mother and Child offers complete care of the health of mothers and their children from the whole Czech Republic. Expert team of obstetricians, gynecologists and neonatologists provide women with a complete care during pregnancy, birth giving and they also offer care to women after the reproductive age.

The Institute for the Care of Mother and Child (UPMD) is the principal teaching hospital for Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Neonatal Medicine for 3rd Medical Faculty of Charles University and is also a teaching hospital for Neonatal Medicine for the 2nd Medical Faculty of Charles University. The Institute is a freestanding maternity hospital with approximately 5000 deliveries a year with 150 infants below 1500g. The Neonatal Department of the hospital includes Level III Intensive Care Unit with 20 fully equipped cots and offers highly specialized intensive care including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and surgery on-site (congenital diaphragmatic hernia, necrotizing enterocolitis, patent ductus arteriosus, post haemorrhagic hydrocephalus, and retinopathy of prematurity).

The Neonatal Unit has extensive experience with multicentre randomised trials and was recently involved in CURPAP study (Prophylactic Surfactant with early nasal CPAP) and also in Med Immune NUMAX trial (Phase III trial ? RSV prophylaxis).

In the neonatology workplace is resolved row of grant assignments of the agency of minister of health CR and grant agents of CR in the area of acute respiratory defects, congenital birth defects, long term follow up of high risk newborns and immunity mechanisms of immature newborns. The results of research are of high value in domestic and foreign professional journals and are frequently presented at international meetings.

Extremely preterm infants neurodevelopment is routinely assessed in the out-patient department and these infants have detailed psychological testing (Bayley Scales of infants development), neurological review and EEG where indicated.
